Erika Torres Woodworking: Crafting Unique Pieces with Precision and Passion

The Journey of Wood and Sawdust: My in Woodworking

You ever find yourself standing in the middle of a woodshop, just surrounded by the smell of sawdust and the hum of your table saw, thinking, “What in the world did I get myself into?” Yeah, that was me a few months back. It started simple enough, you know? I was watching Erika Torres’ channel online, and I thought, “Hey, that looks pretty cool! I could do that!” Spoiler alert: it didn’t exactly go according to plan.

The First Project

So there I was, all pumped up, like a kid before Christmas. My first project? A simple coffee table. Nothing too extravagant, just a nice place to rest my cup of joe and enough room for a book or two. I remember heading to the local lumberyard, the scent of freshly cut pine wafting through the air. I picked out some , straight-grained 2x4s, thinking, “This is gonna be a masterpiece!”

I started off with some basic tools. A miter saw, a circular saw, and the good old trusty jigsaw. You know, just the essentials. Didn’t want to get too complicated right out of the gate. So, I’m measuring and cutting, and I could almost hear that ‘ka-ching’ sound of success in my head.

But let me tell you, the first challenge hit me like a brick wall. I got my dimensions all mixed up. Instead of a clean 36 inches, I cut one board to 34.5. And then, like a house of cards, it all started to tumble down. I almost gave up when I stood just staring at the pile of mismatched boards, thinking, “What was I thinking?”

Learned the Hard Way

After staring into that sea of wood with a growing sense of dread, I thought to myself, “Okay, take a breath. This is just a quirky learning experience.” I grabbed my notebook — yes, I even have a dedicated notebook for this chaos — and decided to sketch out what I was doing wrong. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I realized I wasn’t making proper measurements or marking them clearly.

So, I went back to the basics. Lesson learned: measure twice, cut once. It’s so cliché, but man, it holds so much truth. I started using a framing square and leaning hard into some old-school techniques. I recall the moment when I finally got it right; the satisfaction of seeing those cuts line up just perfect… I laughed when it actually worked.

The Dewalt Dilemma

At one point, I borrowed a friend’s Dewalt table saw. I mean, this thing was a beast. As soon as I turned it on, the sound made my heart race — like the roar of a lion. I was stoked. But, oh boy, did I get overconfident. I forgot to secure the wood properly on a couple of cuts, and let me tell you, the board kicked back at me like it had a mind of its own. I almost jumped out of my skin when it happened!

I realized right then that safety is key. Duh, right? But it’s one thing to hear it, and another to feel that adrenaline rush, wondering how close you came to losing a finger. So after that little adventure, I invested in a proper push stick and made a mental note to always respect the tools.

Touches and the Unexpected Surprise

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I was close to finishing. I had sanded everything down to a silky finish, the sound of the orbital sander buzzing through the garage like a relaxing hum. But here’s where it gets interesting. I’d planned on staining it dark walnut, but I bought a can of something that turned out to be a completely different shade — more of a warm honey color.

When I opened that can, I kind of panicked. “Oh no, this isn’t what I wanted!” But I thought, “Alright, let’s see where this goes.” So, I went ahead and applied it. And you know what? It looked pretty darn good! I couldn’t believe it. Sometimes, accidents lead to something beautiful — it taught me to roll with the punches a bit more.

The Finished Product

When the table was finally done, I swear, it felt like I had built a whole new part of my life right out of those boards. I was proud, and you could see it on my face. I set it in the living room, and every time I sat down with a cup of coffee, I’d wipe a little dust off and just smile to myself. I had crafted something with my own hands. The journey was filled with stumbles and lessons, but isn’t that the beauty of it?

Closing Thoughts

Fast forward to today, and I’ve crafted a few more things since then — some bookshelves, a couple of chairs, and even a bed for my pup, who insisted on claiming the coffee table for herself. Each project has its challenges and surprises, but that’s what keeps me coming back for more.
