Medium Woodworks: A Tale of Trials and Triumphs

So, I sit here with my cup of coffee—a steaming mug that’s probably seen better days, if I’m honest. It’s got that chipped edge from that one time I was rushing to get to the shop, and my hands, well, they’re never quite steady when I’m excited about a new project. You know how it goes, the smell of fresh-cut wood lingering in the air, those shavings landing everywhere like little reminders of what was once a solid piece of lumber. And believe me, I have plenty of stories from my medium woodworks adventures.

The “Coffin Maker” Incident

Let me take you back a bit—maybe a couple of years. I was in the midst of this grand idea of building a coffee table for the living room. It sounds simple, right? Wrong. I had my heart set on using poplar because it was just so darn easy to work with and, you know, had that nice pale green hue that looked good next to our dark leather couch. My buddy, Jake, who’s a real pro—he travels all over the country for work and builds furniture—was beyond excited to help me out.

Well, to cut to the chase, it was late one evening, and I was hell-bent on finishing this coffee table before our family got together for the holidays. I pulled out my trusty circular saw, but in a moment of what I’d like to call “overconfidence,” I decided to skip my usual safety checks. I mean, how hard could it be, right? So I cut my first piece and… well, it was supposed to be a square for the tabletop. Let me tell you, instead of a square, I ended up with a weird-looking shape that I might as well have called a “coffin.”

I stood there, head in my hands, thinking about all the wood I’d just wasted. I could almost hear my grandfather’s voice in my head, “Measure twice, cut once, son.” And I was so tempted to just toss the whole thing out. But you know, there was that stubborn part of me that refused to back down. I sat down on my makeshift —a couple of saw horses and a sheet of plywood—took a deep breath, and tried to figure out how to salvage the world’s first poplar coffin.

Time to Improvise

So, I let my brain churn for a bit, and here’s where things turned around. Instead of fighting against that cursed shape, I decided to pivot (no pun intended). I grabbed my jigsaw and a few clamps, and I cut off the extra angles. Suddenly, I had this creative spark. What if I turned that “coffin” into something with personality? I started thinking of it as a rustic table that had seen life—a table with stories to tell, not just a flat surface to pile snacks on.

I even laughed out loud when I realized that it kind of looked cool. The edges were rough and raw, and I gave it a nice with some linseed oil, which smelled divine. It brought out that natural grain in the wood, and, wow, does the texture feel amazing under your fingertips.

The Stain That Almost Ruined Everything

Fast forward a bit to finishing touches. I went ahead and bought this fancy walnut stain. I’m a sucker for a good dark finish. Oh boy, where do I even start? It ended up too dark, almost black. I had a mini heart failure at that moment. I could vaguely hear my wife’s voice in my head saying, “That better not be another one of your mistakes,” but guess what? I went for it anyway.

I slapped it on, not thinking about how it might affect the overall vibe. The seconds ticked away as I watched in horror as the wood sucked in the stain like a sponge. I worried it would look like a bear had dragged my once-classy table through a muddy pit. I took a step back, almost crying into my coffee, thinking I had ruined it.

But here’s the kicker: after it dried and I rubbed some leftover linseed oil on top, it turned into this incredibly rich that just glowed. I couldn’t believe it—laughter bubbled up out of me. Here I was, heart racing from all these blunders, but in the end, I had managed to create something unique.

A Lesson Learned

I finished that coffee table and it’s been a staple in our living room ever since. It’s survived countless family gatherings, spilled coffee cups, and little kids’ toys that seem to multiply faster than rabbits. More importantly, though, it taught me lessons I carry with me in every project.

If you’re thinking about diving into the world of wood, even if you feel like you’ll make mistakes—trust me, you will, and that’s okay! I used to get so hung up on making sure everything was perfect that I almost forgot to enjoy the process. Each mistake has become a part of my story.

So, grab that lumber, get your tools—whether they’re the fancy ones or the old hand-me-downs that belonged to your —and just jump into it. Every gnarly cut, every unexpected stain will lead you somewhere. You just might end up with something beautiful in the end—in more ways than one.
