Take my recent obsession with hydroponics, for example. There I was, sipping coffee one Sunday morning, dreaming of fresh veggies sprouting from my very own aquaponics setup. Little did I know, this would lead me down a rabbit hole of fish struggles, DIY mishaps, and more green water than I could handle.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Big_Idea\"><\/span>The Big Idea<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Once the coffee kicked in, I decided I was going to do it right. I didn\u2019t stop to think they wouldn\u2019t grow quite as big as you&#8217;d want for an aquaponics system\u2014hey, it was my first try! <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I set up the tank, filled it with water, and dropped in a couple of water treatments, promising myself I\u2019d keep a close eye on these finned friends. To ensure everything was ready for Tom (the biggest goldfish), Jerry, and the one I named after a local football player, I tossed in a few aquatic plants snagged from the same pet store. The water started turning a lovely shade of green\u2014a little too lovely, if you know what I mean. I panicked, thinking maybe it was the fish poop, maybe a nutrient imbalance? I didn\u2019t know if I was raising a problem or fish stew on my hands. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>A couple of days later, I found the filter system I&#8217;d cobbled together with an old pump wasn\u2019t even working half the time. I once had a friend laugh when I told him about the bio-filter I crafted out of an old sock and half a milk jug. But you know what?
