Yep, that was me last summer when I decided to dive headfirst into the world of hydroponics, specifically aquaponics, because honestly, who wouldn\u2019t want home-grown veggies and a mini fish farm, right?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_the_Vision\"><\/span>Finding the Vision<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I remember sitting on the porch, the summer sun beating down, while I glanced at my empty yard. I had just finished binge-watching a series on sustainable living and, like so many others, thought, \u201cWhy not?\u201d I knew the theory\u2014altogether, it sounded simple. Fish poop helps plants grow, and plants clean the water for the fish. It sounded almost magical, really.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>So, I grabbed a few old fish tanks from the shed. They\u2019d been sitting there ever since my son\u2019s first foray into fish-keeping, way back when he thought it\u2019d be fun to have a pet goldfish. I even sketched a little blueprint on a napkin\u2014thought I\u2019d nailed it! <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The first snag hit when I set up the water pump. It was an old model from a fountain my neighbor had tossed out last fall. I swore when I plugged it in, it sounded like a dying cat, but hey, it spit out water, so I was hopeful. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The first week went swimmingly\u2014or at least, I thought so. I tossed in some goldfish; they were cheap, colorful, and honestly, I thought \u201chow could I screw this up?\u201d The water smelled a bit funky at first, an odd mix of pond and something I couldn\u2019t quite pinpoint. One morning, I looked out the window and noticed my water had turned a sickly shade of green. My initial optimism plummeted. It was like I had the trifecta of chaos\u2014my plants grew but thrived in that algae-ridden water, which definitely wasn\u2019t what I had hoped for. Resentfully, I opened the laptop and scoured the internet. It turns out my pump was running too slowly, which was leading the algae to just throw a wild party. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Frantically, I swapped out that old pump for a new one. Much to my relief, it got the water moving. I rushed to clear some of that green mess, but man, the smell was something else. A combination of wet earth and a hint of \u201cwhat in the world is growing in there?\u201d I half-expected a fish to swim up shaking its head, asking for a lifeguard.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fishy_Circumstances\"><\/span>Fishy Circumstances<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>And can I just say, the fish? They didn\u2019t fare too well with my enthusiastic start. One night, I went out there, flashlight in hand, only to discover that I\u2019d lost several of them. I felt like a real failure. Each little fish was named\u2014Flipper, Bubbles, and my personal favorite, Mr. Whiskers\u2014and I couldn\u2019t help but feel an odd sense of loss. My backyard had begun to resemble some freaky fish graveyard.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But I wasn\u2019t ready to throw in the towel just yet. I stared down the odds and reasoned that maybe it was a cycle of learning. Ripe tomatoes appeared, greens sprouted abundantly, and even the fish that lived made a jealous splash whenever I approached, as if challenging me to take some of those luscious tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Some days, I was drenched in sweat, scratching my head instead of sipping coffee. Other days were filled with delightful surprises as I plucked ripe vegetables to pair with dinner.
