The push from the garden club was in full swing. You know how it is in small towns; everyone knows everyone and everyone has their two cents to contribute. Betty from two doors down had her tomatoes practically outperforming our local grocery store’s supply, and then there was old Jerry with his prize-winning cucumbers. I had to step up my game.

So I embarked on this mission—build my own aquaponics system. It involved fish, plants, and a lot of Googling. I scoured the hardware store, mumbling to myself as I assessed PVC pipes, pumps, and fish food. “You can do this, just think of the vegetables!” became my daily mantra.

The Build: High Hopes and Low Tides

My first stop was the shed. I rummaged through it like a toddler searching for candy. I found old rain gutters—perfect for growing plants—and a dusty water pump from my father’s old fountain project. The memories of him scolding me over broken tools drifted back as I began piecing everything together.

I’d envisioned this fantastic setup in my head—a little fish tank with some herbs and possibly even tomatoes cascading down from the gutters. Reality, however, decided to throw a wrench in my idealistic vision. As the hot summer sun beamed down, I filled the tank with water and added my beloved fish—four little goldfish. They seemed so friendly; I named them after my favorite coffee blends: Espresso, Mocha, Latte, and Americano.

The first few days were pure bliss. The water looked crystal clear, my homemade rig actually held up, and I half-suspected those fish were cheering me on. But then… the slow creep of chaos started to churn beneath the surface.

The Setbacks: Fishy Business

I arrived home one evening to an unmistakably foul odor wafting through the backyard. With a wrinkled nose, I cautiously approached the tank. There, my beloved fish were floating, motionless, like some sad little coffee beans. Apparently, I hadn’t calibrated the pump correctly, and the water had gotten too warm. I held a small funeral in my garden, and for a moment I wondered if I should just abandon the whole idea. But my stubbornness (and a little guilt for the fish) kept me going.

After that, I decided to pivot—install a small cooling system. I bought some ice packs. Yeah, welcome to the world of DIY aquarium chillers! The water started to stabilize, but by then my pump was making strange noises and I swore I heard it laughing at me.

The Green Monster: Algae and Frustration

I thought I’d nailed it until I noticed something sinister lurking in my water—a creeping green film that had sprung up overnight. Algae! I had read somewhere that it meant I was doing something wrong, but what? Was my water too still? Not enough sunlight? Or was it perhaps the haphazard way I’d arranged everything? It felt like a lost cause.

In the meantime, my herbs had taken off like they were on steroids, which was surprising. My basil was lush, my mint was almost overpowering, and the lettuce had started to look like leafy green monsters. If only I had thought things through a bit better. You see, after a few weeks in the hydroponics system, I felt that they were ready for soil. I wanted to transfer them to my little garden plot and watch them flourish, but would they even survive after their watery upbringing?

Taking the Plunge: Hydroponics to Soil

With shaky hands and a puzzled mind, I gently uprooted my hyper-productive plants, still grappling with the idea of moving them from the little pond to the earth. I felt so uncertain! My heart raced as I planted them in the soil—a good mix I had created after referring to some videos because let’s be honest, “soil” can mean a lot of things—even if you turn it into a science project like I did.

To my surprise, many of them adapted really well! I almost cried with joy during that moment. Watching the leaves unfurl in the sunlight—not to mention the tiny, soon-to-be fruits—was worth every bit of stress and tear shed over my precious fish. My little experiment had turned into something real, something tangible.

The Takeaway: It’s a Journey

So here I am, backyard and all, dealing with the aftermath of my hydroponics endeavor. I’ve learned so much. Despite the fish funerals and algae-Gremlins, I found joy not just in the produce, but in the process—the messiness, the challenges, and even the little victories.

If you’re thinking about doing something like this, don’t worry about getting it perfect. Just start. You’ll figure it out as you go. Embrace the chaos and the inevitable mistakes.

Life, much like gardening, is about growth—both in the soil and in ourselves.

If you want to dive a little deeper into this gardening journey with me, join my next session right here: Reserve your seat.
