After dreaming of a bountiful crop, now my backyard resembled a sad fish graveyard. \u201cWhat am I doing wrong?\u201d I cried out to nobody. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Bright_Idea\"><\/span>A Bright Idea<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Then, I had a lightbulb moment. I hitched a ride to my neighbor\u2019s farm to talk fish. Old Martha lived a few houses down; I swear she had a plan for everything. Sitting on her porch, sipping sweet tea, she explained how tilapia are sturdier than goldfish, more adaptable to heat, and they&#8217;d actually feed off the plant waste. Well, if my goldfish had been a trial run, my new friends were going to be the main event. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>So, back we went to the pet store. I got a new tank filled, pumped fresh water in, and instead of letting it murky up, I skimmed the algae off the top regularly.
