It was a mix of pond muck and something like rotting vegetables\u2014a smell that wafted through my yard like an unwelcome guest. My heart sank when I gently lifted the lid of my homemade contraption and saw that green film forming on the surface. \u201cOh no,\u201d I thought. \u201cAlgae! I hadn\u2019t included the right mineral mix for my plants. Back to the local garden center I went. \u201cHey, what do I need to get my kale happy?\u201d I asked, as the clerk just stared at my test tubes\u2014yes, I was that guy.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Through trial and error, I learned the significance of macronutrients: Nitrogen for growth, phosphorus for roots, and potassium for overall vitality.
