I filled the barrel with water from the tap, and it smelled like a combination of chlorine and bad decisions. \u201cEh, it\u2019ll work out,\u201d I assured myself as I added the fish and grimaced at their sudden shock. The instructions in those YouTube videos felt like they were meant for someone with an engineering degree. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The plants I initially planted\u2014mostly basil and some scraggly lettuce\u2014looked more lifeless than alive. The water cleared up, the fish seemed happier, and my little garden started showing signs of life. I felt like a proud parent of my little hydroponic family.
