There’s something magical about this time of year that makes you want to dig your hands in the earth. Well, maybe dig your hands into some water instead. A couple of summers ago, in my small Buffalo backyard, I embarked on a project that had me knee-deep in fish tanks, plants, and an assortment of DIY mishaps: I was determined to build my very own aquaponics system.

It All Began with a Dream (and a Few Gummy Worms)

It started innocently enough. Sometimes, right around that harvest moon phase, with a warm cup of coffee in hand, I’d sit outside and let my mind wander. I imagined a lush garden filled with all kinds of vegetables, fresh herbs, and a little twist—fish! Friends had talked about how aquaponics was the sustainable solution to growing food in limited spaces. I thought, “How hard can it be?”

Fueled by a mix of caffeine and the odd gummy worm, I drove over to the local hardware store. I grabbed PVC pipes, a water pump, some net pots, and even a plastic kiddie pool. Talk about a wild shopping cart sight! The cashier raised an eyebrow but didn’t say a word. Maybe they knew folks like me—adventurers on the brink of making a beautiful mess.

The Setup: Pipe Dreams and Fishy Plans

Once everything was home, I set to work. I decided on goldfish for my system. Laugh if you must, but they’re hardy little guys, and my plan was a permaculture paradise! I figured if I could keep goldfish alive in little bowls from Walmart, I could totally handle a whole kiddie pool, right? I filled that pool with water, played around with the pump (that was a whole saga in itself!), and got the fish swimming happily about.

I thought I’d nailed it. The water was practically a crystal-clear window into a miniature underwater world. For a few blissful days, everything seemed picture-perfect. But then… the unthinkable happened. As stubborn as I was, I didn’t realize that I had forgotten to properly cycle the water. It started to smell like a funky fish market.

The Green Curse

A couple of weeks in, things took a turn for the worse—the water turned a lovely shade of green. I stared at my little innocent goldfish as they swam swiftly through the murky depths. “This is not what I signed up for,” I muttered to myself. I rushed to research “water turning green” and discovered that algae took over when there was excess sunlight and nutrients.

So, there I was, in my backyard, armed with an old broom, trying to scrub the sides of my beloved kiddie pool. Let me tell you, the smell was something else. I tried turning the pump up, thinking it might help; instead, it felt like I was creating a fishy whirlpool… and somehow inviting more disaster.

The Fishy Fate

As if the algae blooms weren’t enough, suddenly my goldfish were acting strange. Their little faces, which had once glimmered with life, turned pale. “Oh no,” I thought. It felt like watching a slow-motion tragedy unfold. I was failing them. Desperate to salvage whatever remained of my fish family, I did the unthinkable—I rushed to the local pet shop hoping for some magic fish-saving knowledge.

The shopkeeper was kind enough to share a few tips, but mostly, I left with two more unsuspecting goldfish, bearing the hope that they would survive where the others hadn’t. Little did I know, this venture was teaching me so much more than just how to grow plants or fish.

A Cup of Hope and a Harvest of Lessons

After weeks of battles with algae, fish health, and a stubborn pump that refused to cooperate, a small glimmer finally began to show. I started tweaking everything—reducing sunlight, adding a bit of shade with some old curtains I found, and balancing the nutrients. Slowly, my water began to clear. My plants started poking their green heads above the surface, too.

I had finally managed to cultivate a tiny ecosystem right in my backyard. I felt a wave of pride—the kind you get when grandma serves your apple pie recipe at Thanksgiving. Through all the flops, late-night research, and bumps along the way, I had inadvertently learned about patience, resilience, and the beauty of trial and error.

The Takeaway: Just Start

To anyone sitting with a cup of coffee, dreaming about building something beautifully imperfect, I say this: don’t worry about getting it perfect. Dive into the water, make those mistakes, and embrace the chaos. Whether you end up with a thriving system filled with greens and fish or a humorous story to tell over coffee, the journey itself is worth it.

So, as this harvest moon shines down on Buffalo, I encourage you to step out into your own backyard adventure.
