The smell\u2014oh man\u2014the smell wafted up to my nose like a punch. It reminded me of summers spent at my grandparents\u2019 lake cabin, but this was no dreamy recollection. But I didn\u2019t get cocky\u2014oh no, I was well aware that any little hiccup could send my aquaponics dreams spiraling. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I learned about cycling the tank; the water didn\u2019t just need to flow, it needed the right bacteria to break down fish waste into nutrients for the plants. At one point, I thought I was absolute royalty in the fish-growing game until I noticed one of my goldfish floating\u2014belly up. Well, that was a reality check. I muttered something about \u201cyou\u2019re in fish heaven now,\u201d and buried it behind the shed. I\u2019d never tasted anything better. My neighbors came by with raised eyebrows, and while I could easily tell they were skeptical, I caught a glimpse of envy in their eyes.
