Well, I’m not one of those people. My big idea was to dive headfirst into building an aquaponics system right in my backyard in Ellensburg. What could go wrong, right? Little did I know, it was the start of a wild, messy adventure that turned my backyard into both a green oasis and a bit of a swamp.

The Spark of Inspiration

It all started one rainy afternoon when I was curled up on the couch, flipping through YouTube videos. That’s when I stumbled upon a video titled “How to Build an Aquaponics System for Under $100.” I was hooked. The couple in the video made it sound so easy and so eco-friendly. They even had this little array of fish and vegetables thriving in perfect harmony. That’s when I thought, "If they can do it, so can I!"

Armed with an old fishing net I’d found while clearing out my garage and some enthusiasm that could launch a small rocket, I set out on my quest. I had no idea what I was in for.

Gathering Supplies

I started rummaging through my shed and came across an old plastic tub. “Perfect!” I thought. It was a tad grimy, but a little bleach would solve that—right? I grabbed some leftover PVC pipes from a previous “I swear I’m going to fix that” project and set off to the local hardware store for the rest. With a trusty roll of duct tape and a couple of cheap water pumps, I was feeling like a DIY champion.

When I finally brought everything home, I laid it all out in my backyard like some mad scientist preparing for a grand experiment. I felt like I had nailed it.

The First Fish: A Discus Disaster

Now, let’s talk about the fish. I decided I needed something colorful, so I went for discus fish. Very fancy, very exotic, and very, very wrong for a novice like me. As I floated those poor guys in, I thought about how beautiful they’d look against the tomatoes I intended to grow.

But what surprised me was how delicate they were! Just a few days in and I could tell something was up. The fish started acting sluggish. I was watching them like a hawk, worrying that they weren’t happy in their new home. They needed warm, stable water temperature—which, of course, I forgot to monitor. Long story short, I lost a couple, and it felt like I’d personally failed them.

The Stinky Part

Then came the fun part: establishing the water cycle. To say I was naïve would be an understatement. I thought I’d nailed it, but before I knew it, the water started turning the color of swamp sludge. My backyard smelled like a mixture of rotten eggs and a farm after a rainy day. I remember standing outside, scrunching my nose while trying to figure out if I had accidentally created a toxic waste dump instead of an aquaponics system.

What I eventually learned was that good bacteria were supposed to make everything thrive. However, I had no clue how to nurture said bacteria and spent hours trying to fix the mess. I could practically hear my grandmother’s voice advising me on how to manage expectations in life: “Dear, it’s not all rosy and pretty.”

The Rainy Day Revelation

One rainy evening, sitting on my back porch nursing a cup of coffee (sighing dramatically over lost fish), I came up with a sort of revelation: maybe all this trial and error was part of the journey. The water was finally beginning to clear, and those little pests I’d tossed in for experimentation (a combination of goldfish and the last of my discus) were starting to swim about with better vigor.

It wasn’t perfection, but watching fish swim around while tomatoes started to sprout gave me a bit of hope. I learned a crucial lesson: sometimes you need to embrace the chaos. My setup was still very much a work in progress, but even on those frustrating days, I would catch a glimpse of green poking through and feel a flicker of joy.

A Green Haven

Fast forward a few weeks—my “system” was beginning to resemble the delightful setup I’d envisioned. The tomatoes blossomed, and even kale (which I originally thought was the rabbit’s food) thrived in those murky waters. I was starting to feel like maybe I had this thing under control. With hindsight, I can laugh about it now, but at the time, it was a rollercoaster of highs and lows.

What was most surprising to me was how much joy I found in those little moments. Just standing in my backyard, feeling the sun on my face, watching the fish and the greens coexist, reminded me of the joy of creation.

The Takeaway

So, if you’re thinking about starting your own aquaponics journey—take it from me.
