Exploring Hawthorne Hydroponics in Aurora, CO: Your Go-To Guide

My Aquaponics Adventure in Aurora, CO

You know, the day I decided to dive into aquaponics was a typical Saturday in Aurora. I remember having my morning coffee, feeling particularly ambitious, the sun barely peeking over the distant Rockies. I had just come from a Hawthorne Hydroponics workshop—my first taste of that lively world where plants grow without soil. But it was the aquaponics aspect that snagged my curiosity. After all, who wouldn’t want a little fishy help with their tomatoes?

So there I was, armed with a half-baked idea and a vague plan I scribbled on a napkin over breakfast. I envisioned a beautiful little ecosystem right in my own backyard, where my plants would flourish alongside some fish swimming happily in their tank. It sounded vibrant and picturesque in my mind, but boy, let me tell you—you never know how a fish tank smells until you have one in your own garage.

Digging into the Details

I rummaged through my garage, that treasure trove of discarded dreams and half-finished projects. I pulled out an old 50-gallon tank that had been serving as a makeshift storage unit for my ‘ toys. It was scratched and a bit crusty, but who doesn’t love a good DIY project? I thought to myself, "If Ed from down the street can turn a rusting shed into a tiki bar, I can surely turn this old tank into a fish paradise."

Next was the growing system. A visit to the local hardware store brought me wandering through rows of PVC pipes, and yes, I might have spent an hour down memory lane in the plumbing aisle, reminiscing about the times I’d binge-watched YouTube DIYs. I picked up an elbow joint and some flexible tubing, thinking that would do the trick. Oh, how naive I was!

Back home, I juggled the tank and the pipes like a circus performer. Feeling like a modern-day aquaponics Picasso, I wedged everything together, using zip ties and duct tape—my trusty allies when faced with the uncanny of home improvement. I can’t even describe the satisfaction I felt as I watched water trickle down through the pipes I fashioned into a mini garden above the fish tank.

At this point, I should mention my fish selection. I thought I’d go with tilapia; they’re resilient, or at least that’s what the lady at the fish store told me. “They’ll thrive!” she assured me with a wave of her hand, probably having no idea of my newfound status as a fish dad and aquaponics novice. I picked out five of the most energetic ones, each more colorful than the last.

The Full-on Fish Smell

When I finally introduced those fish to their new home, I felt accomplished. The water shimmered under the Colorado sun; it was a scene ripe with possibility—the plants would have food, and the fish would have a thriving ecosystem.

And that’s when reality hit. As I went to check on my little project a few days later, I was greeted with a smell that could only be described as distinctly… swampy. Panic set in. I thought I’d nailed it. By some divine miracle, I had even made sure the pH levels were balanced. How could it smell like that? I peered into the tank, and to my horror, the water had begun to turn a vibrant green.

I rushed back to that Hawthorne Hydroponics workshop notebook. I figured if there was a place that could help me, it would be those folks who talked so passionately about growing crops like they were part of the family. Then, it hit me. Algae. I had become an unwitting algae farmer.

Lessons in Patience

After a lot of trial and error—and let’s not forget the heartbreaking moment of losing my little green friends (seriously, fish are the most fragile creatures)—I realized I needed to take a step back and breathe. Meanwhile, I had supportive neighbors popping by, offering words of encouragement and suggesting that maybe, just maybe, an air pump would prevent some of my troubles.

Eventually, after adding an aquarium air pump and cleaning out that tank more times than I can count, things began to stabilize. The water clarified, the plants started sprouting green leaves, and I could almost see a glimmer of shining down on my backyard.

The Joy of

From that low point, it was like a weight had been lifted. The fish seemed to dance more energetically, and I was so proud as the basil and peppers began to show signs of life. Even the smell of the water shifted from swampy to something reminiscent of a fresh stream—an entirely different kind of victory worth celebrating! I was ready to share this newfound joy and plant survival instinct with anyone willing to listen.

I’ve come to appreciate the entire experience for what it is—an adventure filled with downright messiness and unexpected growth, rooted in love for the craft. Aurora, with its array of gardens and little communities, has a magic that fuels people to build and experiment.

Just Start

If you’re sitting there with thoughts of growing something—anything—under your own roof, don’t hesitate. Dive in! Sure, the road has its bumps (and probably a sinuous algae patch or two), but the rewards are immeasurable. Mistakes turn into lessons, and failures transform into unexpected joys.

Get your hands muddy, embrace the frustration, and above all, laugh at the little hurdles that come your way. Like me, you may find that your aquaponics dream is a broken fishnet away from reality, and that every green leaf means you’ve made it just a little further.
