Exploring Hydroponics in Greenville, NC: A Guide for Beginners

A Backyard in Hydroponics

You know how some towns have their little quirks? In Greenville, NC, you’ll find folks friendly enough to stop and chat about their gardens, but they’ll also shoot you a knowing wink if you mention hydroponics. Now, I’ve always been one to tinker, maybe a little too much for my own good, and one spring afternoon, over a cup of coffee, I decided to dive into this world of soilless gardening. Little did I know, I was signing up for a rollercoaster of failures and surprisingly sweet victories.

The Spark of an Idea

So there I was, sitting on my back porch with the warm sun on my face and a quick scroll through Pinterest later, I stumbled across pictures of vibrant greens flourishing in these high-tech systems. “I could make that,” I thought. After all, I had a nice patch of yard that was begging for attention, not to mention a shed brimming with old bits and bobs — leftover PVC from a long-gone BBQ project, a half-broken water pump from our last attempt at a backyard fountain, and those plastic containers I couldn’t throw away because who knows when I might need them?

With the enthusiasm that only a little coffee can muster, I got to work. I rummaged through the shed and found everything I might need: a couple of 5-gallon buckets, that pump that had been collecting dust since 2015, and even an old aquarium heater I’d forgotten about. “What could go wrong?” I chuckled to myself, blissfully unaware of the chaos to come.

Building the System

After a few hours of elbow grease, I had a rudimentary aquaponics system set up. I aligned the buckets in a tiered fashion, allowing water from the top bucket — where I intended to grow lettuce — to drain down to the next, where the fish would ideally reside. It seemed perfect in theory, but if I had a nickel for every time I thought I had something nailed down only to realize it was all wrong, well, I’d have a pretty penny by now.

The first hiccup happened when I filled the buckets with water. Oh, the sweet smell of fresh water, mixed with a hint of chlorine. It was a tropical getaway — until I noticed that unsettling greenish hue. “Is that algae?” Yep. Within a week, the water had turned into a murky soup. I quickly found out that I had been too eager, skipping the part where I should’ve cycled the water properly to allow beneficial bacteria to develop.

Picking the Fish

After a mini-crisis of confidence, I figured I’d salvage the situation and headed to my pet store for fish. My first mistake? I went in with a very romanticized idea of aquaponics, imagining vibrant goldfish swimming amongst my greens. But a kind employee dissuaded me, insisting on Tilapia for their hardiness and growth rate. Who needed a goldfish when you could have a fish that doubled as dinner?

And let me tell you, I got quite attached to those fish. They became part of the family — even gave them names: Bubbles, Floppy, and Gill were daily entertainers as they swam around their new home. But oh boy, did I learn about the fragility of life in that little tank. One fateful night, the heater went out, and when I went out to check, I was met with a cruel reality. Bubbles was floating with the fishes, and I reckon I shed a tear. That was the moment I almost threw in the towel. What had I gotten into?

Trials and Triumphs

Despite the heartache, I pressed on. I learned to watch the water’s pH and to monitor ammonia levels more closely than I ever had the patience for in my high school science class. Yes, there were days when I felt like I was a mad scientist, tinkering away with test kits, but when I saw those little seedlings push through the growing medium, I felt like a proud parent.

I can still picture vividly the sensation of plucking my first batch of lettuce. It was an aesthetic wonder — those bright green leaves contrasting beautifully with the vibrant orange of Gill swimming beneath. I remember munching on that first leaf, fresh and crisp, the kind of flavor that you just can’t replicate with store-bought produce. Weeks of anxiety and mistakes were suddenly washed away in that moment of victory.

Finding Comfort in the Mistakes

Looking back, I’ve realized that hydroponics, much like life, is about the journey and not the destination. I learned how to be patient, how to adapt, and most importantly, how to embrace the hiccups along the way. Sure, I had fish lose their lives, plants that wilted, and plenty of moments when I nearly threw in the towel. But out of those struggles came lessons that somehow brought me closer to my little backyard .

So, if you’re sitting there, scratching your head and contemplating whether to take the plunge into the hydroponics world, here’s my advice: Don’t fret about making it perfect. Just take that first step. Tinker away, laugh at your mistakes, and find joy in the small victories. Like me, you’ll probably stare at your water one day, wondering why it’s turned green, but I promise, you’ll figure it out along the way.

If you’re thinking about doing this, don’t worry about getting it perfect. Just start. You’ll figure it out as you go.
