Grow Beautiful Hydroponic Ranunculus: Tips for Thriving Blooms

The Aquaponics Adventure That Almost Drowned Me

Living in a small town in the heart of America, where everyone knows your name (and your business), you come to find that opportunities for adventure are often nestled right in your backyard — sometimes quite literally! I’d recently bitten off more than I could chew when I decided to take a tumble down the rabbit hole of aquaponics.

Now, let me set the stage. Picture a sprawling backyard with a few fruit trees, a lovingly-kept vegetable garden, and a shed that seems to hold the collective memories of home repair mishaps. That shed became my makeshift workshop, filled with old boards, screws half fallen out of their containers, and—this is the kicker—a collection of fish tanks that my boy Kevin and I had once used for our failed attempt at breeding guppies. I’ll get to that part in a minute.

Dreaming Big

Aquaponics sounded like the answer to my green-thumbed prayers. I wanted to grow lots of lovely ranunculus, those floppy flowers that look like something you’d find in your grandmother’s garden—a bit like roses, but with a splash of whimsy. Plus, it would be nice to have fresh herbs permanently at my disposal. I had this grand idea that fish could help grow my flowers.

Armed with ambitious dreams, I gathered supplies: a few old 55-gallon fish tanks, some PVC pipes from the shed that used to hold up our garden trellis, and an assortment of pots I’d commandeered from my daughter’s old clay project days—each piece holding its own charm and character. Let me tell you, the anticipation was palpable. I could already see the vibrant blooms and smell the earthiness of fresh basil wafting from my backyard.

The Reality Check

Oh, but reality smacked me upside the head quicker than you can say "hydroponics"! The time I turned on the water pump, it was like a scene out of a comedy. Water gushed out of the pipes like I’d turned on a garden hose with the nozzle missing. The smell of fish and quickly wafted through the air, making my stomach turn. "How hard can this be?" I muttered to myself. Spoiler alert: quite hard.

My selection of fish brought its own misadventures. I had gone with tilapia, thinking they could handle the ups and downs of life without much fuss. Boy, was I wrong. You see, I forgot to check the , and instead of settling in comfortably, my poor fish were flopping around like they were auditioning for a role in Jaws! And then the green. Oh, the green! Within a week, I stared into my water tanks only to find an unruly algae bloom that made it look like a child had dumped a bucket of paint in there. I thought I’d nailed it, but the smell turned sour, and I nearly cried upon seeing my tilapia floating lifelessly.

Making Peace with Failure

At this point, I was ready to throw in the towel. Was it the water pH? The wrong kind of fish? Did I forget to ask the local fishmonger for the secret to aquaponics stability? To say I felt like a failure is an understatement. I half expected to see my neighbors peeking over the fence, whispering about the eccentric woman who couldn’t even keep fish alive.

But somehow, amidst the chaos, things turned a corner. You see, after a little Googling and a few heart-to-heart chats with the local garden club matriarch (who wisely suggested creating a tea), I swapped fish for goldfish — the kind you find in bowls at carnivals. Far less temperamental and undeniably cute, they became my little companions in the new aquaponics endeavor.

As weeks rolled on, I found myself laughing at my previous missteps. I started realizing that the fish were thriving, the ranunculus were sprouting, and the smell transformed from a ‘dead fish’ cologne to a subtle green garden scent. Finding joy in the little victories felt like an awakening. I even had a particular goldfish who became more affectionate than any pet I’d ever had. I named him Bubbles.

In the End

I went from a daunting dream to an unexpected friendship with my fish and a newfound appreciation for the nuances of life, whether it be flowers or animals. Sure, I stumbled and faced ways to mess things up along the journey—seems like destiny’s favorite game, right? But taking those small, steady steps is what led me here, to the rippling water reflecting the sunshine, coaxing open new blooms.

The growth wasn’t merely in the flowers; it blossomed in me, too. So, if you’re thinking about diving into aquaponics or even just trying your hand at growing flowers for the first time, don’t fear missteps. They’ll often guide you to unforeseen joys.

Just start! Let your little corner of the world surprise you. Embrace the stumbles and the triumphs alike. You’ll figure it out as you go.
