Highlights from the KC Woodworking Show 2023: Techniques and Trends

A Trip to the KC Woodworking Show 2023

So, the other day I found myself sitting down with my usual cup of joe—just the basic black stuff, not those fancy pumpkin spice lattes or anything—and I couldn’t help but reminisce about the KC Woodworking Show I went to this year. Man, what a whirlwind of a trip that was! Honestly, I still feel the excitement buzzing through me.

Now, if you’re new to this whole woodworking thing, let me tell you, it can feel a bit intimidating sometimes. It sure did for me when I first started. Here I was, just a small-town guy looking to carve out some shelves and maybe a few birdhouses—nothing too fancy. But that show? It was like being handed a treasure map to all the tools and tricks I didn’t even know I needed.

The Unexpected Detour

Well, let’s back up a sec. My journey began the night before. I had my bags packed, my trusty SketchUp plans for a new coffee table scribbled down(yes, I still sketch, nothing beats pencil on paper for me). The alarm was set, but I woke up late. I mean, who turns off their alarm, snooze and all? Me, evidently. I rushed out the door, half a muffin in hand and with my work boots still a little dusty from the night before—who knew adventure still awaited!

I got there just as the place was opening—a sensory overload, I tell ya. The smell of fresh-cut pine, cherry, and oak wafting through the air almost knocked me back. And then there were the sounds—the whirring of saws, the chatter of fellow woodworkers swapping tales, and the rhythmic thunk of hammers! It was a symphony of creativity I didn’t know I was missing.

Diving Right In

So I dove in headfirst. I grabbed a cup of coffee (okay, I had to have a second one, it’s a marathon not a sprint, right?) and started wandering around. The whole layout was like a massive playground crafted for people like us who getting their hands dirty with wood and steel.

I stumbled upon a booth showcasing this brand called Grizzly, and oh man, their table saws had my heart racing. They had everything from band saws to dust collection systems, and I thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice to have one of those shiny machines in my garage?” I almost lost track of time drooling over the tools. I swear I could hear my wallet groaning, “Please, not again!”

Lesson Learned: Don’t Get Caught in the Hype

Now, you see, this is where my enthusiasm got the best of me. I didn’t stop to think; I just wandered around imagining my future masterpieces. I almost pulled the trigger on a beautiful router, but then I stopped. I mean, I don’t even have a proper workbench yet—what was I thinking?

It’s easy to get swept up. I nearly forgot why I was there in the first place! Sure, the tools are shiny, but I realized I needed a plan—like my buddy Jim always says, “You can’t build a house without a foundation.” That hit home for me.

I took a deep breath, stepped back, and decided to spend the day soaking it all in instead. I attended a couple of —watching expert woodworkers whittle away at massive until they turned into beautiful pieces of art. It inspired me. One of them made it all look so effortless; he was enchanting, like magic before my eyes, and it almost had me convinced I was good enough to try something like that. Almost.

A Humbling Realization

But here’s where things got real. After a while, I wandered into a small room where they were discussing finishing —something I struggle with more often than I’d like to admit. These pro-finishers had tips for every kind of wood and application. I was scribbling down notes like my high school self during a pop quiz. It was all good until they started talking about lacquer. I have this memory—my first attempt at finishing a pine cabinet, and I made a mess of it. Who knew you needed to sand between coats? It looked like a kid’s art project gone wrong! I laughed when I finally got it right—years later.

I realized that it always comes back to the basics. Start small. Don’t skimp on quality, and for heaven’s sake, Read the instructions!

My #1 Takeaway

At the end of my day, I was sitting in my car with that ubiquitous KC show bag filled with brochures and little samples. As I took a sip of my now-cold coffee, it hit me. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been at it for years, it’s about the journey, isn’t it?

So if you’re thinking about dipping your toes into woodworking, just go for it. Make mistakes, learn new things, and don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself along the way. I wish someone had told me that earlier—woodworking isn’t just about the finished product. It’s the smell of fresh sawdust and that satisfying sound of a chisel carving out a beautiful joint. So yeah, even when things get messy, just dive in—there’s something magical waiting for you at the end.
